Warming Trends: Shane’s Textile Picks

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Nothing like a cold and grey winter day to remind us all that homes are a place of warmth of comfort. This winter, consider adding a little sunshine to your interiors with these fabrics and hides. You could recover a chair, add an accent pillow, or create a new bedspread or lampshade. A little bit of warmth can go a long way in the winter months and in this economy.

Sell Your Products

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Decorati just launched this cool new feature, where all our member manufacturers, showrooms, and designers can add a link to their web sites and blogs that automatically links back to their page on Decorati.  Neat!  Now you can easily see what I have for sale on my Decorati designer showcase page.  Most of my products are new, never-been-used extra fabric yardage from past projects.  Others are furniture pieces I am helping my clients sell because we replaced them.  All are top quality.  Click below.

Decorati Buying Service

To set up your own store on Decorati, simply go to Decorati.com, register, click on “Sell an Item” to upload products, and then in the My Account tab click on “Seller Tools” to get a button for your web site like the one above.  We offer a number of different designs.  You earn advertising credits on Decorati, too.

See how I added a button to my website too:  www.shanereilly.com

Good luck.  Kaching!

Decorati and domino at the D&D

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Decorati and domino magazine teamed up for a panel discussion at the D&D Bulding in NY.  The panelists, pictured above left to right:  Eva Jeanbart-Lorenzotti, Founder of Vivre, Dakota Jackson, Founder of Dakota Jackson Inc., Cecilia Pagkalinawan, VP of Marketing, Frette, and myself, Founder of Decorati.  In front of a packed audience of over 100 designers, we discussed how each of our companies works hard every day to build our brands.  A few highlights:

Eva suggested developing a point of view, or style, or something distinctive to set yourself apart.  Better to stand for something and forego a few jobs then to be indistinguishable from the next designer.  Similarly, Dakota described his famous library chair, and how that one piece helped define his vision and how he wanted to be viewed as a product designer.  He also told us how involved he is with his customers, and how he has built his brand by closely watching the attention paid to customer inquiries and follow up.  Cecelia helped us aspire to build a brand like Frette has, 150 years strong and known around the world.  Frette has built so much meaning and detail in its brand that new employees go through brand training.  Her comments forced us to examine what we designers would instruct others to learn about our own brands… would we have enough for a training session?  I kicked off the conversation by laying out four components of building a brand that are critical in the design industry:  your vision/identity, advertising, marketing collateral, and partnerships.  It was a fun, informative seminar.

Thanks again to domino and the D&D Building for working with us, and of course to Dakota Jackson for hosting a lovely breakfast reception following the event in his showroom, and to all the panelists for sharing their expertise.

Ken Fulk: Dandiest Entertaining

Ken Fulk

San Francisco designer Ken Fulk hosted the “It” party Thursday night, titled “Dandiest,” in honor of Diane Dorran Saeks’ new book, Santa Barbara Living (Rizzoli Publications- see one of Decorati’s recent Rizzoli book giveaways).  Nothing can be more stylish than an enormous loft filled with Ken and Saeks’ crowd of tastemakers… designers, photographers, artists, collectors… I caught up with Ken recently at his office (pic above).
