The story of Decorati
I started Decorati while living bi-coastally in New York and San Francisco in 2006. I was managing big design projects in both cities, flying frequently, and working seven days a week against very challenging deadlines. I often had to lug heavy three-ring catalog binders and suitcases full of fabric samples back and forth across the country since I had so little time to spend in design centers. I worried about needing a sample late at night or on the weekend when the showrooms were closed. Through this experience, I realized that even with large design budgets and my limitless willingness to work, it was incredibly challenging to purchase high-end furniture and fabrics quickly. While there are many elements that contribute to the slow nature of the high-end design industry, I isolated what I believed to be the largest inefficiency – the difficulty in acquiring information about products. Or, to summarize, SEARCH. So, we launched Decorati in 2007 to make it easier for designers, and now consumers, to find high-end, designer products easily, online, anytime.
Today:
Decorati has come a long way since we started in my living room and conducted our first employee interviews at Starbucks. We have an office based in the energetic SOMA district of San Francisco near many other young companies. Our main focus has been perfecting our search technology for the core made-to-order furniture and textile products that designers purchase everyday, but we also have developed project management tools, an online showroom communication system, and recently Design Advisors, a consumer-designer matching program.
The Future:
The goal of Decorati is to be the worldwide destination online for interior design. We started with the made-to-order products available in showrooms, added sample sales, antiques, designers’ collections, Decorati Access magazine/blog, and Design Advisors. We work with companies all over the world, and also partnered with Elle Decor, Metropolitan Home, and Pointclickhome.com. Stay tuned. We’re just getting started.
